His drawings, both nudes and portraits in pencil, charcoal and crayon, show him to be a veritable master in the modern academic tradition, a master of depiction of character and volumetric monumentality. Some of the drawings here compare favorably with those of the best of Augustus John, being rendered winch a felicity of line and texture, or bold thatched strokes of soft pencil, that are positively breathtaking.
